UVB phototherapy treatments in Cardiff, South Wales, Bristol and UK

Used for more than 75 years to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, UVB phototherapy is a very effective treatment. It works by exposing the skin to a type of ultraviolet (UV) light called UVB. The UVB light penetrates the skin, and this slows the growth of the skin cells that lead to these skin conditions.

UVB light therapy treatment is excellent in controlling psoriasis, eczema and PLE (polymorphic light eruption) or prickly heat.

Phototherapy is the safest and most effective treatment for psoriasis, eczema, acne and vitiligo. Indeed phototherapy is considered by the British Association of Dermatologists as the only safe treatment for pregnant women, as most other treatments include the use of steroid creams.

Treatments are undertaken at The Clear Skin Dermatology Treatment Clinic or can now be arranged at home our Home Phototherapy Service. The Clear Skin Dermatology Treatment Clinic is one of only two specialist phototherapy clinics in the UK.

The key to success with light therapy is consistency. Present in natural sunlight UVB penetrates the skin and slows the growth of affected skin cells. Treatment involves exposing the skin to an artificial UVB light source for a carefully graded series of increasing times on a regular schedule. UVB phototherapy can be combined with other topical creams to enhance clearance of skin conditions. Combining UVB in this way may increase efficacy dramatically and allow for lower doses of the topical medication to be used.

The provision of UV light therapy services in the NHS is currently inadequate and many more phototherapy units are needed to serve the whole population. In response to this need T he Clear Skin Dermatology Treatment Clinic was set up in 2006 in order to provide a top quality phototherapy service for private patients suffering from chronic skin disease.

In the rest of Europe the availability of phototherapy treatments is much more readily available, indeed in Holland there are over 2500 home phototherapy ultraviolet treatment devices.

UVB phototherapy or light therapy, involves exposing the skin to ultraviolet light on a regular basis and under medical supervision.
