Home Photodynamic Therapy Treatment (PDT)

Healthcare Inspectorate WalesPhotodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a treatment for certain skin tumours including Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma, Bowen’s Disease, Actinic Keratosis, persistant warts and other skin conditions.

Utilising a  light-emitting sticking plaster we are able to provide a safe and effective treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Simple and easily applied, the plasters are used in Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) which is an established alternative to surgery for many forms of skin cancer.

Home Photodynamic Therapy Treatments – How does it work?

On the day of treatment we will apply cream and fit you with a mobile Photodynamic Therapy (PDT ) Ambulight device.  This allows you to receive Photodynamic Therapy treatment whilst taking part in your normal daily routine at work or home.  The mobile Photodynamic Therapy device consists of a light source which we place over the area of skin to be treated and a battery pack which you can wear on a belt or on a neck tie or scarf. Once we have fitted the mobile Photodynamic Therapy unit you will be able to leave the Clearskin clinic. When you leave we will provide you with a dressing which should be applied to the area after treatment has been completed to keep it dry.  The total treatment lasts for 6 hours.

In summary – Home Photodynamic Therapy treatment provides:

  • Effective treatment for Actinic Keratosis and other skin cancers.
  • Less pain than other treatments
  • Convenient to administer allowing you to continue your daily routine
  • Only One visit  required to the Clearskin Clinic (unit goes home with patient, activates after 3 hours,  the unit is sent back by post).
  • PDT treatment avoids the scarring associated with surgical removal of a tumour and the need for an in-patient hospital stay
